Vergennes Historical Society

October of 2012 saw the formation of a Vergennes Historical Society.   After many years of meeting informally to share stories and resources as well as provide materials for city events a need was felt to organize in order to more efficiently pool our resources and share information with the public.  So far work has been done to develop a set of bylaws and register with the State of Vermont as a non profit.   Next on the agenda is to pinpoint when meetings will be held and formulate a plan of action.   No doubt topics of study will include the French Canadian population in Vergennes, War of 1812, industry, Weeks School, and the railroad.

Leaves, Leaves and More Leaves

We all enjoy the beautiful colors that fall leaves provide us but when they hit the ground, they become problematic for the operation of our culverts and catch basins.  It is impossible for our public works crew to maintain the miles of ditches and hundreds of catch basins free of leaves that obstruct the flow of stormwater.  We need your help.  Please remove leaves from the ditch that may run along the road in front of your house.  And if you have a catch basin near your property, please monitor and remove any obstruction caused by an accumulation of leaves.

International Chiefs of Police Vergennes Police Department Staffing and Workload Report, June 2022

In the fall of 2021, the City of Vergennes contracted with the International Chiefs of Police (IACP) to analyze department staffing of sworn and non-sworn staff and delivery of police services.
Goal of the analysis was to provide the City with data-based insight on
- how the existing resources are being utilized
- whether they can be redeployed to reach agency and community goals for officer availability and other needs
- efficacy of current practices
- efficacy and impact of current shifts and schedules

Attached is the first draft of that report.  The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) is the world’s largest and most influential professional association for police leaders. With more than 31,000 members in over 165 countries, the IACP is a recognized global leader in policing.

Message from the IACP:  IACP Report, June 2022We would like to thank the city officials, Vergennes community members, and the Vergennes Police Department staff who have assisted with this study and provided insights into the operation of the police department. Notwithstanding the findings of Vergennes’ approach to policing and the culture it creates, we found many Vergennes police officers and other city employees to be dedicated public servants who strive each day to lawfully perform their duties with respect for all members of the community. The importance of their often-selfless work cannot be overstated
