The City of Vergennes supports and has fully cooperated with the Attorney General’s investigation into the matter regarding Chief George Merkel. We are confident that the investigation will be conducted in a fair and thorough manner. We also believe that once the matter is resolved that the allegations made by Sheriff Newton will be proven to be baseless.
With regard to bias free policing, we take our responsibilities seriously. And Chief George Merkel and all of our officers will continue to treat visitors and residents with the respect that we all deserve. We will continue to keep Vergennes a safe and desirable place to live and visit.
